How do I use the placeholder tags in my Show Notes?

What are the placeholder tags for?

At the bottom of the Show Notes editor window on each episode you'll find a list of tags. The tags are used as placeholders for information you want to include in your episode's Show Notes. We then dynamically fill those placeholders for you with the info from your show or episode. This should help you to quickly write your Show Notes.

What tags can be used in Show Notes?

Here's a list of the current placeholder tags that we have and what they do:

{{people}} - This pulls through the list of the people you have added to the People section of that episode. This information is shown on podcast apps, however it is skipped on Transistor websites and sharing pages as we already show the People information in the Creators & Guests section.

{{donate}} - This is a link to the donation URL you have configured on your show's Settings page under the Social Media section.

{{supporters}} - This is just for our Patreon integration users. It automatically displays a list of your show's Patreon supporters to thank them. The Patreon integration is setup on the Integrations page.

{{new_supporters}} - This is just for our Patreon integration users. It displays a list of new Patreon supporters since your last published episode.

{{campaign_start}} - This is just for Campaigns users. It will display the starting dynamic show notes you have added to your current campaign.

{{campaign_end}} - This is just for Campaigns users. It will display the ending dynamic show notes you have added to your current campaign.

{{chapters}} - If your mp3 audio file for the episode contains chapter information this tag will display the timestamps and associated chapter information.

{{video}} - If your episode has a video link using this tag will insert a link to the provided video url. This will be shown on podcast apps but will be skipped on Transistor websites and sharing pages as we already show the video as an embed.

{{transcript}} - If your episode has a transcript using this tag will link to the transcript sharing page for the episode. This link will be shown on podcast apps but will be skipped on Transistor websites and sharing pages as we already show the transcript.

How do I use the placeholder tags in my Show Notes?

You can click on one or several of the tags to put them into your Show Notes where you would like to the information to appear. If you regularly re-use the same tags on each episode you can copy and paste them from one episode to the next, to act as a re-usable Show Notes template.

What do the placeholder tags look like on a published episode?

Here's what the tags look like when you add them into your Show Notes editor:

Here's how the tags render in a podcast app, like on Spotify:

What happens if an empty tag is added to Show Notes?

Empty tags will simply be skipped and will not display the placeholder tag. For example, if you use the {{video}} tag on an episode that does not have a video, the placeholder tag will not be shown in podcast apps or on Transistor share pages.

You'll see in the example shown above on Spotify the {{ new_supporters }} tag and {{ campaign_start }} tags were skipped because that particular episode did not have those things.

You'll notice some tags include the option to change the title. For example, the video tag looks like this:

{{video | title: 'Click here to watch a video of this episode.'}}

You can change the title of the link text in between the commas to customise the link. This option is also available on the Transcript tag too. We will be expanding this option to our other tags in future.
