What does the 'Other' category mean in analytics?

What's the 'Other' category?

When a listener presses play in a podcast app, we receive a request to deliver the episode audio file to the listener. That request contains information about which platform or app is being used. We can identify certain apps and podcast platforms by the 'User Agent' that is present in the download request. We convert the obscure User Agent info into to their more commonly known app names for use on our Analytics graphs e.g. Spotify, Apple Podcasts etc. We are regularly updating the list of which podcast players and apps we can recognise to minimise the number of downloads shown in the 'Other' category.

Analytics - The 'Other' category on the Podcast Players graph

Occasionally when new podcast apps are released you may notice an up-tick in downloads registered in the ‘Other’ category. These are downloads that have come from an unknown User Agent. Once we have more data we may at a later date be able to correctly attribute these downloads to specific apps and platforms. The download numbers in ‘Other’ category will rise and fall as we continually update the list of User Agents that we recognise.

If you notice a spike of downloads in the 'Other' category please reach out to support@transistor.fm or on our Live Chat and we can investigate. It may lead us to recognise a new podcast app that we can add to the Podcast Players graph.
