How do I add my private podcast to Spotify?

As a creator, you can now allow your Subscribers to listen to your private podcasts in Spotify! 🎉

Who can use it: This feature is available on all plans and it’s for use with private podcasts (not unlisted)

What does it do: Allows private podcasts subscribers to listen in Spotify

What’s changed: You’ll see the new Distribution tab appear in your Private Podcast. You then have the option to submit your show to Spotify to allow this feature to be available to your subscribers.


How To Setup Spotify Open Access


  • Login to Transistor.fm
  • Go to the Private Podcast you want to add to Spotify
  • Go to the new Distribution page
  • Click the green button Submit My Show To Spotify Open Access
  • Give Spotify up to an hour to fully create your listing page
  • Optional - slide the toggle if you want your show to be discoverable in Spotify public search results
  • Spotify will now be one of the listening apps listed on your Subscribers landing page


How Do My Listeners Access The Podcast on Spotify?


Once you have enabled Spotify Open Access on your show, you can let your subscribers know that Spotify is now an option!

They will find that option in their original Welcome Email and on their personalised Landing page.


You can also re-send the Welcome Email to your non-activated Subscribers from the Subscribers page heading menu. You may want to update the Welcome Email temporarily to mention Spotify being available in the Subject line and then change it back after you have notified your inactive subscribers.

Do subscribers need a Spotify account?

Yes, Subscribers will need their own Spotify account if they want to listen to your private podcast on Spotify. It doesn’t have to be a paid Spotify account. Subscribers can use the free version of Spotify. If your Subscribers don’t have a Spotify account or don’t want one, they can still listen directly in their browser or use a different podcast app.


Do Subscriber’s email addresses in Transistor have to match their Spotify account email address?

No, the email address for the Subscriber in Transistor does not need to match their Spotify account. Spotify gives them the option to sign-in with their chosen Spotify account.


What analytics are available for downloads from Spotify?

You will see a new Spotify Open Access bar chart on your analytics page that will show you daily Spotify download numbers. You'll also see Spotify listed in your Podcast Players graph. However downloads from Spotify are not attributable to individual named subscribers.


Does this work for paid private podcasts?

This feature works in the same way for both paid and free private podcasts. If you want to charge for your private podcast you may want to use a membership platform like Ghost.org to take payments first, before adding your subscribers into Transistor to give them access to the private podcast.


What does a private podcast look like on Spotify public search results?

If you enable the setting so that your private podcast appears in Spotify's public search results, the show will have a lock symbol on it for non-members. Once the creator has linked their Spotify account, the lock symbol is replaced by a play button and the content can be played.


What happens on Spotify when I remove a subscriber's access?

The content will no longer be playable on Spotify (and all other apps too) Spotify will show the content with a lock symbol on it.


How do I remove my Private Podcast from Spotify?

What Analytics do I get from Spotify?

You can see in the Subscribers list when the green Spotify logo appears, that subscriber has connected their Spotify account. More details on Analytics to come soon.
